  1. Troy, download comes up as episode 5?

    Jon

  2. Should be fixed, sorry for the error and thanks for the good catch brim!

  3. Just a couple minutes into the episode, but I’ve got to ask – why the accents when reading comments? It’s hilarious.

  4. Well the reason for the accents was that when I went back to edit the show I had a hard time telling when I was done reading the comment and everything was kind of jammed together so when I re recorded it I decided to try changing my voice up a bit and my freind who was listening laughed and said he liked it, so I kept it.

Im glad you found it amusing, I am always trying to find a new way to add a little humor to the show.

  5. Great stuff, it was great to have Stelek respond to the comments from the last podcast.

It’s funny though that the last episode had the most comments out of all your other episodes. Podcasts get boring if every one agrees. I would like to hear more debates where there are two valid but totally different views.

  6. Another great show, Troy. I do understand Andrew’s points, and I can totally see where he’s coming from. I don’t want to seem like the kind of person to gang up on him for his personal opinions, because I’m not, but his attitude this episode was a lot more moderate, and it was enjoyable. I also win the award for a great run-on sentence with the most commas possible just now. But, back to the point, I do believe that Andrew puts forward very valid points and his experience does qualify him to make certain observations, but it just seemed a downer last time, and I think that’s why people were rallying against him so much. The discussion concerning the Dark Elves was good and informative, which is what I want from a review of the army book. Thanks again for a great podcast, and all of you keep up the good work.

P.S. Whether you were trying to sound like Craig from the D6G or not, you totally nailed it.

  7. Ok – I listened to this podcast up through Andrews “explanation” of what happened last episode. I didn’t listen to the entire episode as I don’t play Warhammer – just 40k.

With that said, I have a few comments. Andrew – While you may qualify for the title of “Most Patient GW Player” having played their games for 20 years, it still doesn’t explain why when ANY subject comes up, you comments are typically cynical, acerbic or just plain rude.

I don’t understand your explanation of why you are the way you are. If I heard you right, there are different types of assholes – you’re just one of the nicer assholes, right?

I’ve know and played with plenty of people like you. Generally, players like you take all the fun out of a game. It doesn’t matter the setting (tournament or fun) – it’s just not fun.

While I do understand that much of our society (American) has a “win at all costs” mentality – that doesn’t mean your games have to be like that. It’s called self-control – something you probably didn’t learn at an early age.

You give good gamers a bad rap with your attitudes and it’s just not fun listening to you blather on about what an expert you are in how much this particular game sucks, or how much this other game is broken, or how much this writer is a tool.

My decision is made – if Andrew is on a future episode, it will get deleted. Hopefully, he’ll just be an infrequent guest.

  8. Awww man, Andrew Sutton aka Stelek is on again. I can add him to my ignore list on Dakka, but there is no such feature on TWIW. Really an annoying and depressing personality – can you edit together a “Stelek free” version?

  9. Troy,I have enjoyed your podcast, it helps me paint my armies while I listen. That is up until episode 5 and listening to Andrew. I decided to give Andrew another chance seeing as he may have had an off day. Much to my dismay I found him evert bit as repulsive and only got as far as his ranting about Dark Elf special characters. I had to stop it in discust, there was nothing productive covered other than his prattling on about how broken things are like a 8 year old with ADD after eating a case of pixie sticks. I honestly felt sorry for Jeff who tried to change the subject and move on to the meat of the list. He was much more gracious than I would have been. I don’t think I will give him a third chance which is unfourtunate, because he really drags your show down.Best of luck,A former listener.

  10. @ Irken and ALJW;

I understand your dislike guys, but before you decide to write off every episode with him in it I would ask you to listen to the Dark Elf review, even if your not a warhammer fan.

I think you will be suprised that he was not negative at all and was in fact very supportive of the army, provided a number of interesting strategic insights and his only complaint about it was that he thought it could be a bit Too Strong, in the US Torney scene where special characters are allowed.

He showered praise on the system and the army.

My point is that he is not universally negative, he just really grinds his axe on things he dislikes.

My plan is to only have him on the show to talk about things he does like, and in that case his substantial knowledge can be an asset to the show.

I do like how so far the split is 50/50 on Andrew this episode as opposed to the 10/90 for/against split on episode 5.

To me that is a positive sign, and I hope you can try to set aside your dislike of him as a person and see if you can appreciate his take for what it is.

In any case, I really appreciate the feedback. Andrew is not on the roster for next episode, our GenCon news special to be released a week from tuesday.

Thanks again everyone, even when you hate me, I love to hear what you have to say ;)

  11. Like jeff said he’s an arrogant bastard. (here in Aus that means something different that what you probably think)

Irken Empire you must have a pretty big brush to make wide sweeping remarks like that. I hope you don’t paint your minitures with that brush.

  12. Considerably better than last episode and Andrew was certainly tolerable this time, but I think it shows that Fantasy isn’t really something he know very well. He had to be corrected on quite basic rules stuff a few times too many, and his mention of the tactic of using Shades in combo with Black Guard is a very basic tactic and not by any means abusive.

So not bad by any means, but getting a more experienced player alongside Jeff would have been more interesting. :)

  13. I think Andrew become in this episode the view point that was needed. I know I feel after only 4-5 yrs of GW pretty damn cynical about the company and thier competance. I watched TSR crash and burn because of the same arrogance and the whole ‘They will buy what ever crap we tell them too’ attitude. With the revitalized discussion now much more interesting to listen to I have re-added this podcast into my i-tunes. Though this will make me sound such a keener it was pretty cool to hear that my comment made to air and you were correct Mr. McCauley , Jeff carroll and Andrew Sutton did make a great match up.

I am very pleased with how the show is now turning out. Though I will not ever play Dark Elves I myself have bought a box of the new cold ones to us as mounts for my death rider command squad. (Since I do not fancy trying to order from Forgeworld and wait till 7th edition of 40k for delivery.)

  14. Samurai Gunslinger – tbh Andrew Sutton’s relentless pessimism doesn’t bother me too much. I am English. What I can’t tolerate is his tiresome arrogance.

  15. I don’t know, I think Andrew got a bit of a bum rap. Predictable. To me, these were superficial criticisms of superficial problems. In substance he contributed quite a bit to the episode and, frankly, a lot of his issue was that he was rushed, and when rushed he appears to have an unfortunate manner of summarizing his opinions.

  16. I’m a new listener, and yeah, I think I’ll FF through Andrew’s segments. It’s like listening to someone complain that they hate the taste of Drane-O over and over. Um… dont drink it? You’re in control of that, little pilgrim.

And when his negative comments start to contradict themselves it becomes clear that he simply looks for thing to dislike. (i.e., you can just shoot everything now, and they’re all dead; then later…. you can”t stop army X rushing up the table now.)

    Otherwise, I’m enjoying the podcasts.

  17. An enjoyable show, a quick point on sportsmanship perhaps it may be a good idea to only have a score of zero or a negative score, so it’s only this guy is ok plus nothing or this guy is an (insert desired expletive here) minus such and such points.

  18. Just wanted to post some support for Andrew. I find him interesting, and pretty incisive. I don’t mind the negativity about some things – there are some major flaws in the world of GW. Andrew still obviously likes the GW scene enough to keep playing.

Don’t go too far the other way now and just have people being positive about everything on us ;) There may be more positives than negatives, but there’s always problems with anything and they make for interesting discussion imo.

  19. Good critical discussion:

“It would have been better if GW had…”
“This other game does that this way, and here’s why it works better…”
    “This doesn’t work because…”

    Andrew’s critical discussion:

“I don’t know why they thought that was a good idea.”
    “That’s stupid.”
    “That’s also stupid.”
“Okay so he jumps over the woods and I’m dead, so that’s stupid.”

The first is nice to listen to. Even if we disagree, at least we could see the rationale behind the POV and there’s an alternative solution offered. The other way is just browbeating. There’s nothing in there to sink your teeth into or think about; just sit there and be subjected to someone’s ax grinding. But, hey, that’s why media players have an FF button, and to each his own. :)

  20. Hay, guys.

First, great pod cast. I listen every week.
I typed up a few responses while listening to this show. Normally, I don’t do the feedback thing, but since that’s what this one was all about…

    1. Flames of War will do Pacific someday, just not any time soon. I’m not sure where the “never” came from, in the meantime and there is a fan made rule set.

    2. Everyone is all over Andrew, but I like him. With all the PC nonsense covering the gaming scene on line, he’s like a breath of fresh air. I may not agree with everything he says, but I want to hear him say it.

While we’re all bashing on net hosts who do the best they can for free, I want to drop my dime on Gunther. He’s obviously your friend, but unless there’s some kind of deliberate choice to have him ask all the, “Gee, Tim, what’s Warhammer?” kind of questions, I don’t understand what he really brings to the discussion, other than the phrase, “Uhm, I haven’t played for a while, but…”

Sorry if that’s not nice, it is intended as constructive criticism. I do not lie to my wife about how a given pair of pants makes her ass look, either.

    3. I love D6G, but they do seem to get all bunched up pretty easilly some times.

    4. Australian law is, from my point of view, the strictest and most draconian in terms of copyright. If the iTunes store doesn’t have something down there, the very strong influence of the RIAA type groups is to blame, and their politicians let it happen.

    5. Star Ship Troopers is the sequel Total Recall never got. It really is a shame that people seem to confuse it with that book… :-)

    6. Comp is crap, if its in the book its legit. Actually, I just would not participate in an event with comp. The notion that the company can’t test all combinations is bull shit.
Sportsmanship is lame, but comp? Forgetaboutit. But you don’t need a score to handle the extreme ass hole — just show them the door.

    7. Oh my god do I hate pro-painted armies in tournaments. They drive me bat shit loco insane. But that’s a shit policy, so I think I see this pretty much exactly like you do — run ‘em, but no points for painting. Which should be fine, once we fix scoring systems so that fighting painting don’t affect each other (except as a tie breaker)

Well, that’s about it. Keep your show non mamby-pamby. Let the thin skinned chicken shits go listen to The Dice Tower, we need at least one pod cast with balls.

(normally, I’d spend more time on word choice, but this time I’m just shooting off the cuff. Like I said, this is what I wrote while listening.) Except that I skipped the Dark Elf review — even when I was willing to give GW the time of day, Elves in general were the not-interested army from the not-interested game.

  21. I am heavily invested in to both Versions of Warhammer, having 8 full companies of Dark Angels and most of the other two , as well as Tau, Sisters, Guard and Demon Hunter Armies. However that does not mean I also do not think that the company is run by a group of retarded chimpanzees flinging poo at a dart board to decide corporate policy. People can like playing the game but dislike (or hate ) the company. I know I tend to avoid tournaments because of how many bad apples I tend to run into. It is tough to care when you see this middle aged man across from you arguing about the cover save that the rock should give you all to give his army an advantage cause he really wants to win.

The biggest problem with 40k right now are tournaments and the players. I never had any rules problems when playing with my friends. Why because we are all busy people who play with our ‘war barbies’ for fun. We do not take the game for anymore than it is a game. But with ambigious rules and a competitive enviroment people tended to work over the system like it was a thai whore.

As for the pro painting well I could care less if people pay to have thier army painted. If you are one who likes to paint thier armies to a ridiculous standard kudos to you. But give the ego a break and just deal with the fact that some people will just not tell tournament organizers that someone else painted thier army. I do think that having an overall is just asking for people to cheat, thier should be as was mentioned a best general a best painted and a peoples choice( Favourite player) award. Having criticisms of GW is not being a podcast of hate after all it was arrogance that ended up being Tsr’s downfall and it looks like GW might be headed the same way.

  22. While I too do not normally comment on podcasts, I felt I had to contribute to the discussion about Andrew’s role on TWIW. While I can agree that Andrew has the potential to bring insight into discussions of GW products, a topic he obviously has a great deal of knowledge about, it is his delivery that is the low point of the show.

I agree that he is not offensive, and perhaps every discussion forum needs someone who can ‘tell it like it is’, but Andrew’s arrogant whining makes it hard to try to listen to what he has to say. Rather than lament that this rule or that unit is ‘broken’ (a term I never hear used on the other gaming podcasts), making constructive suggestions on how the company or players could deal with that situation is much more entertaining and ultimately helpful to the listeners.

Andrew presents a one-dimensional perspective on GW, mainly that of they’re a bunch of ’stupid’ idiots, and as a result, fails to provide listeners with a more constructive and fullfilling exposure to the wealth of knowledge he holds. I would normally recommend giving him another chance, but his reaction to previous criticism with statements such as ‘I won’t be bullied into changing’, shows his inability to receive criticism constructively. Andrew needs to see the difference between asking for change, and demanding for change.

As I find myself wincing at his comments and tone more and more, I have begun to worry that he will be a regular contributer to a show I have otherwise found to be among the top two or three miniature wargaming podcasts on the net.

I truly want to see TWIW grow to realize its full potential as a leading gaming podcast and I hope my comments can somehow contribute to a reflection on the future direction of the show and its cast.

    Thanks.

  23. Andrew is totally awesome and I want to have his children. And I am a married heterosexual male.

I hope that counters whatever negatives have been brought up recently :)

To be honest I think this was a great Dark Elves review, structurally similar to a Podhammer episode but from a totally different angle. And I liked it.
I also like that Stelek is strongly opinionated and has reasons for his opinions BUT is also willing to take criticism without having a fit or getting insulted. In my opinion he should be on every show because he’s interesting to listen to – as long as there is an balancing presence on the show as well. Keep it up!

  24. Great show Troy. Was not a fan of Stelek the first time around but loved him in this ep. also relly good to hear jeff on again, its great to hear him on another show other than his own putting his 2 cents in. Just gatta ask when you doing a Warmachine and Hordes show?

  25. Thought I’d better comment on the whole “Stelek” thing. I’ve got no beef with his opinions, in fact I agree with many of them. Certainly regarding GW’s hitherto ignoring of FAQs, which hopefully is now being addressed better. BUT, he doesn’t do himself a favour by the way he portrays himself. he makes it sound like somehow that being the kind of ultra-competitive 40K player that would rather win games than make friends is somehow something to be proud of!

I have no idea whether (as he maintains on the basis of his own experience) that somehow as a breed US 40K players are all uber-macho dick-measurers. Somehow though, I suspect not – from listening to the likes of 40kradio, D6G and other guests on TWIW, and knowing how big the non-competitive RPG scene is in the US in comparison to 40k…

So, by all means lets hear his opinions, but if he wants his contribution to be worth listening to he wants to lighten up a bit. Pure maths-hammer/matrix-gamering makes for a boring conversation and ergo a boring monologue on a podcast, and while tournament play is an important aspect of the hobby, it is not the only part, nor even the most important part. And someone who appears to invest so much of their time trying to break the rules, just so they can demonstrate how superior their intellect is to the rest of us mere fluff-gamers… well what do I say? Another podcast (Dice Like Thunder) has a brilliant name for that type of player…. “Neck-beards”… Maybe if he gets tired of his current obsessions he could find a job as the comic-store owner on an episode of the Simpsons?

    J/k…

“Lighten up dude” as I believe you colonials put it so quaintly…

  26. Good show, I enjoyed listening to it.

Personally I don’t mind if “the controversial one” is on the show, he deserves to say what he thinks, and its actually better to have good, bad and neutral opinions on topics rather than just “its all good,” that way the whole picture can be taken into account and opinions on topics won’t be biased, allowing others to base their own opinions off several sources.

Keep up the good work, Troy.
