Discussion Topics:
1 Wargamers and our Image :
To the general public, wargamers are nothing but basement dwelling, acne ridden fat teenagers with no social skills or personal hygiene. As the hobby has grown and the demographics of who we as wargamers are has changed how accurate is this image? How does it differ in the US and Overseas? What can we as wargamers do to help bring our hobby the same level of acceptance slowly being gained by video games and comic culture? If Geek is the new Sheik, why are we still the bottom of the nerd ladder?
2 Wargaming and the Internet, the role of the MetaGame.
As Wargaming has grown and the acceptance of forums, blogs, and large national and international tournament competitions have become common, the internet has assumed a very prominent role in Wargaming. What some call the Metagame, the idea of internet collaboration on army design, scouting, tactics forums and discussions and statistical analysis has become part of many of our hobby. How does this help or hurt the hobby? Does it make you a more competitive gamer, or just a ‘net decking copycat? Is this practice more common in the US or overseas. Does it effect some types of games more than others, and what part if any does it play in your enjoyment of the hobby.
3 Warhammer 40k 5th Edition.
With the release of numerous full preview editions of the rulebook and the changes now public knowledge what impact do you think these changes will have on 40k in particular and the hobby in general. If you have drifted from 40k in recent years will this pull you back, or push you further away. If you are a hardcore 40k fan boy, are you happy or upset with the changes, and which of the changes do you think will make the biggest impact on the way the game is played?

Hi Troy,
I believe your guest from D6G was “Raef” not “Russ”. You have a wee typo in the show notes.
Thanks!
Fixed it, thanks Russ!

May i be in a future edition please?
I feel the show would benefit from having me on board!
If you are interested in appearing on a future episode you can reach me at troy.mccauley@gmail.com and we can talk further.
I think holywood hit it on the head when talking about wargaming and our image. It’s not mainstream but I think it’s getting close to geek with the advent of MMO’s and video games being pushed into mainstream. Remember it was too long ago that VG’s were considered a nerd activity. In my opinion there are three levels, nerd, geek then the norm.
Nerd(Dnd and wargaming) is the level where only the truely interested and involved learn and build on it. The reason only nerds are involved is because of the time and effort required to get involved none more so able than the teenage and uni student nerd (which is where most of us began). However they suffers from the ready to judge norms who fear the unknown and this fear is what we face in our hobby and as nerds. Wargaming is on the verge of Geekdom but still not quite there yet, GW may make that possible but it may take a while.
Geeks(MMO’s and boardgames) aren’t as involved as nerds in mechanics or building something different but are still willing to take pieces that nerds build, reshaping it into something more understandable to them and even to norms. Nerds like what Geeks build because it’s beer and pretzels and less taxing but it wont hold their interest for long. Geek is given cult status now because norms have learned that geek is interesting because it’s different and new (even though it may have been around for 20+ years) but also through the net being mainstream norms are now able to understand more about Geeks (hence Geek is the new sheak).
Norm(Golf) is where things become truely mindless, there’s skill but not the skill that geeks and nerds thrive on. It’s at a state where anyone can pick up and go, geeks and nerds look at those things once but never really get involved.
The only way to remove the stigma attached to wargaming is in educating norms as to what wargaming really is, but that’s only if you can get them to focus for long enough to listen without them thinking of golf.
